Essay on interactive video
Essay on interactive video
Intro:
Interactive video comes in many different shapes and sizes ranging from a quick two minute advertisement to a hour long virtual tour of a museum, the videos my class have been watching and analyzing over the past week or so come under four categories which are viral, user generated, virtual tours and film trailers. These videos can exists on a number of different platforms, which could be on nearly anything with a screen or Internet access e.g. a television, computer or a multimedia player. There are millions of different videos out there but each one must come under its own category for example the most common and viewed category is user generated which can mostly be found on the internet on sites such as youtube, which allows anyone with internet access to post up a short ten minute video of themselves or anything that they may want to put up, as long as it follows the rules and regulations which are mainly against people posting up videos for people aged eighteen and over. The possibilities for interactive video are literally endless it could range from a video on youtube, which claims and tries to teach viewers a new language in ten minutes, this video would have obviously been made for educational purposes whereas on the other hand on the same exact website you could come across a video of skateboarders failing tricks and falling on their faces which would solely be for entertainment purposes.
The most controversial type of interactive video would be using it for advertisement because trying to sell a product is all fair and good and there are a lot of products that could only be advertised and marketed using videos but the most common complaint against interactive videos are about the tedious and annoying pop up advertisements which are constantly interrupting peoples internet surfing, I think that if someone wants to buy a product they will go searching for it, I don’t think its right to unexpectedly force a loud, space on your screen taking video of a new vacuum cleaner to hit the stores when that person may already have a perfectly working dyson hoover at home, there are not many draw backs to interactive video but this is defiantly one of them.

Virtual tours are also another favorite category of mine because I find them very easy, simple and user friendly while at the same time still being as interesting as the real thing, there are a lot of different situations a virtual tour would be handy in and the most common found would be for a venue or place that customers would pay to visit for example a hotel or museum because the paying customer can have a sneak peak around the venue before actually transferring there money over which can be so helpful because who wants to pay a fortune for a hotel room and when they arrive the room doesn’t even have a view fit for the price tag. This is why virtual tours can be so helpful, time saving and cost efficient. I looked at a few different user generated videos which had the same objectives, to be amusing and make the viewer laugh but they were made in very different ways, two young men from china literally became over night superstars by filming something as simple as lip-syncing a well known back street boys song on a relatively cheap web cam in a internet cafĂ©, since the day the two men put this video on YouTube it has been gathering up millions of views which just goes to show how powerful and widely viewed user generated videos can be, you can become a overnight celebrity from a video you made in three minute.
On the other hand being well prepared and rehearsing your video can mean the difference between a brilliantly entertaining video and a waste of time that no one will watch, this is shown in another user generated video I analyzed which is a comedic parody of the magician David blane, the actor playing David goes up to random pedestrians and pretends to wow them with seemingly fascinating magic tricks which always fail and leaves the person shocked and gob smacked, this video is different from the Chinese backstreet boys one because you can clearly see it has been rehearsed and practiced to achieve the most comedic affect because the first two videos that the creator of the David blane parody posted up where hilarious so in turn they gathered up millions of hits, but the third and fourth didn’t gather up half as many views as the first two because you can see the creators became lazy and didn’t put as much effort into the final videos, which really makes the idea a letdown seeing as the first two where so funny.
In conclusion I feel that without interactive video the modern world would literally be completely different I can’t imagine how boring the internet would be if you wasn’t able to watch any type of video, amusing and educational, the internet would in simple words be a online library with only worded information and pictures, I think that the internet wouldn’t be used half as much especially by teenagers.
